Foods You Shouldn't Have On An Empty Stomach

Rolling out of bed with rumbling stomach makes us gobble up just anything that comes first in our sight. It may seem like a regular trick to satiate our morning hunger, but some of these foods when eaten on empty stomach could actually be harming our body.

Yogurt and other fermented milk products

Eating yogurt or fermented milk products on an empty stomach forms hydrochloric acid. This kills the lactic acid bacteria present in these milk products and leads to acidity. Hence, eating these products should be avoided on an empty stomach.

Bananas

Best known as a super-food, banana satiates hunger and is good for digestion. Bananas contain high amounts of magnesium and potassium and when eaten empty stomach, can imbalance magnesium and potassium levels in our blood.

Tomatoes

Though tomatoes are enriched with Vitamin C and nutrients but should definitely be avoided on an empty stomach. The tannic acid present in tomatoes increases acidity in the stomach and may lead to gastric problems.

Pears

Pears contain crude fibre. When we eat it on an empty stomach, it may harm the delicate mucous membranes.

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits are packed with fruit acids and when eaten on an empty stomach, can cause heartburn and gastric problems.

Green raw vegetables

Enriched with amino acids, green vegetables like cucumber when eaten on an empty stomach can cause flatulence, abdominal pain and heartburn.

Tea and other caffeinated beverages

Drinking tea or coffee on an empty stomach increases acidity and causes heartburn and indigestion throughout the day. These beverages suppress the secretion of gastric juices and reduce bile and acid required for food digestion.
